Pioneer 500A Kuro – Time to upgrade
After many years of great service its now time to upgrade to a new TV due to a faulty PCB board within my external Pioneer media box. ‚ Its a shame as this TV was just fantastic, looking for a new replacement, my preferred option would be Sony/LG or Panasonic.

Bad news John…..no chance of repair or 2nd hand media box?
But Be prepared for disappointments with your new Tv! …(like i was with the Panasonic VT55)… compared to my trusty old (but still wonderful) Pioneer Plasma
……….your also gonna miss your Pioneer media box!…..now many many ‚ cables will have to go direct to the back of your ‚ new Tv06/05/2016 at 9:28 am #30303
John…..there is a KRP600A Kuro with a smashed screen on Ebay de ….for 600 euro!!…but has the media box you need ……might be handy for spares and keep your mighty Pioneer Kuro going ?06/05/2016 at 6:04 pm #30313
Thanks for your feedback which I really appreciate, I am of course sad that I will now no longer be able to have the pleasure of the Kuro but it has served me well.
I phoned a Pioneer Dealer in Dusseldorf today (Millan TV) and he explained that they still have spares and it would cost me around 300¢â€š¬ for second hand/reconditioned pcb, or a new pcb for around 500¢â€š¬, my thinking is that I would rather invest that money in a new TV and have already narrowed my choice down to a Panasonic DXW904 (65inch -German version)
I viewed the TV today and was blown away…..then I viewed a few YouTube videos and one well known/high class reviewer placed this model as the new reference TV of 2016…….need to save a few more euros as it will cost around 4200¢â€š¬.

Just as a update, I was in the process of striping the media player apart, ie packing the Media receiver away for good and decided to try and swap the Display port cable around, can you believe it, it was once again working, unbelievable never thought of trying to swap the cable around, well I dont know how long it will last but I will be ordering a new cable on Monday……just in case

Nice one !!…. bet your pleased………….Maybe the dodgy cable was made by Samsung … 🙂 ……..
now no need to downgrade to that big expensive lump of Panasonic Plastic …..
Tho….. I thought OLED was now the best option for new Tvs not LED…?
Did i really see in the DXW904 youtube video panasonic saying bright Orange is the new Black? ……really! LOL08/05/2016 at 3:01 pm #30324
Of course I am pleased as I was just about to start the process of packing it away…..
Samsung, would never consider.
LG with new OLED’s seems to be the future and I believe a new range of panels are due on the market any day now but from what I have read (always dangerous) the new range of OLEDs are not able to achieve the brightness level needed to show off HDR (even though there is very little content)
Steve, I was really, really impressed with the Panasonic, truthfully very impressive worth a look at Saturn/Media Markt or wherever
John10/05/2016 at 11:49 am #30345
“Samsung,would never consider” ……No neither would I…..
I’ll checkout the Panny DXW 904 next time I’m at Saturn..(not that I’m looking for a new TV) …..My 2013 model Panny VT 55 w60 plasma… will have to do for the next few years…….or until OLED is perfected ….
but TBH quite happy with HD picture quality… ..never mind HDR , 4K etc….
Good luck with your Kuro …hope it lasts a few more years ‚ …..14/05/2016 at 4:53 pm #30546
Many thanks, fingers crossed that it continues to work for the foreseeable future

<hr />Pioneer Kuro 500A, Arcam AVR600, BDP300, Kef LS50, Rel Sub
This was apparently‚ Samsung who tried to insert “Sun solar flare” brilliance levels into the new requirements for the new Ultra HD Premium labeling introduced by the UHD Alliance (of which both Samsung and LG are members!!) so that OLED could not get the certification! A great marketing trick by Samsung to beat your fellow member seen as their biggest threat …. LG)
LG Oled panels have no issue in providing the required levels … in fact I have seen comments that Samsung LCD’s are so bright you need sun glasses to watch them!!
As always in marketing, convert your weak points to a strength to counter the opposition!!17/05/2016 at 6:12 pm #30728
Twol, you are correct a lot does has to do with good marketing and Samsung is a expert at great marketing (in my humble view)
Sorry to report that the problem that I had with my Kuro has now returned which is sad and I am afraid thats it for me with the Kuro, as they say all good things must come to and end.
I now have to be patient and wait for a suitable replacement, still in the frame are both the Sony and the Panasonic but will now add LG with there new range of Oleds for 2016 is worth considering.

Bad luck John……What you gonna do with your old Kuro then? …….How much do you want for it?18/05/2016 at 9:33 pm #30744
Steve, I have the media receiver at our local Euronics store for a so called last ditched attempt to get it back up and running. ‚ I know that the Pioneer Service Centre in Dusseldorf could get some parts in, in around 10 ‚ to 15 days but the price they want to fix it while not excessive (around ¢â€š¬400) I am just in the mood to go through the hassle again…..from what I have read on a few forum sites the receiver seems to suffer from a heat build up and after a while the ic resistors just cannot cope, and yet they only cost a few euros and I also have a link to the part which ironically is a German part. ‚ The chap at Euronics asked me to leave the receiver with him for a few more days and if he is successful then great if not then its the end.
Steve, I am not even sure what it is worth in its current condition, I have of course the original boxes for both TV/Receiver up in the attic.
Steve, I would willing sell it to you for a very modest price but your location is not exactly around the corner but in this day and age nothing is to far.
John19/05/2016 at 4:14 pm #30749
Good luck with the repairs ….hope it works out ….
Not sure what a *modest price ” ‚ for a pioneer plasma is these days ?……but if the price is right …i might be interested …..but you would get more money for it on eBay…….than i could or would offer you…….as 2nd hand electronics are a big gamble …….
like i said ….I’m not really looking for a new tv………but having said that….a Kuro 500A would look lovely on the wall … 🙂 …….19/05/2016 at 4:43 pm #30750
I am not expecting too much hope in respect with the repair as Euronics is not a recognised repair centre in repespect to working with models such as the Pioneer Kuro but if it works out then great if not then nothing lost I will just pack it all up and store it in the cellar‚ because as you say second hand electronic equipment like the Kuro is not everyones cup of tea especially if one part of the package is not working.
Steve, I have never ever being on ebay let alone sold anything on eblay so in this respect I will not be putting on ebay but as spares it could be well worth it.

A big, big thank you for bringing your collection of handy tools thereby helping us to get the Kuro off the wall.
Steve, I really hope you are able to get it back up and running and soon, ‚ I will keep looking for your updates to see how you are progressing.
John.31/05/2016 at 6:58 am #31134
Hi John…..Yea….i hope i can get the Kuro going …or ill have a quite expensive mirror on the wall …. 🙁 ….
Anyhow….I striped down The media box so the circuitboard could be removed …..Just waiting for the new parts to arrive…then I can take the mainboard to a soldering specialist to ‚ have the 2 new Semiconductors (Marked in red in pic 3) soldered in place (no way could i DIY ‚ solder those tiny things) ….fingers crossed…. It might work again.?…if not …will have to search for a second hand Media Box…!…..
edit…opps…2nd pic no good….but I can not remove it ….31/05/2016 at 3:45 pm #31139
So…. The 2 semiconductors (original Pioneer parts)…arrived in the post this morning ……and took the Board to the main Panasonic repair place ..very near to ‚ Munich ‚ airport ….now just waiting for a phone call …when its ready to collect ‚ .. 🙂 …..
